The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Presence
One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.
He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
